Vice Chair for Research, Chief, Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology-Immunology
Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Betsy C. Herold is Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology-Immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she serves as chief of the division of pediatric infectious disease and vice chair for research in pediatrics. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from Brown University, and her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Northwestern University, where she was appointed chief resident and later pursued postdoctoral fellowships in pediatric infectious diseases and virology. Dr. Herold directs a translational research program focused on the interactions between viruses and their host and using that knowledge to develops novel treatment and prevention strategies. Through her basic science studies, she has developed a unique candidate vaccine for prevention of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, which is being advanced for phase I clinical trials. Her lab also investigates how HSV interacts with HIV to promote HIV reactivation. Her team also has discovered a previously unrecognized phenomenon in cell biology whereby viruses flip the inner and outer leaflet of the plasma membrane to expose intracellular proteins required for viral entry. Most recently, Dr. Herold has studied why children respond differently and are relatively protected from severe COVID-19. Defining the differences in the immune response in children compared to adults will provide insights into what is needed for protective immunity against this virus and future pandemic viruses. Her clinical research focuses on infections in pediatric transplant recipients. She helped established and is co-chair of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society Transplant Research Network, whose goal is to support and promote projects focused on preventing and treating infectious disease among child transplant recipients. Dr. Herold is author of 182 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 26 invited reviews or chapters, and has mentored numerous students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows.
