Leena B. Mithal, MD MSCI is a pediatric infectious diseases physician and translational researcher with a focus on perinatal microbial exposures, immune response, and health outcomes. She is passionate about improving congenital/neonatal infection outcomes and uncovering the role of the early life microbiome in child health. Dr. Mithal leads studies on perinatal transmission of bacteria, the impact of COVID-19 in pregnancy, and novel diagnostic approaches for neonatal sepsis, currently funded by an NIH K23 award. Dr. Mithal also serves on the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Research Affairs Committee and is Associate Program Director of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at Northwestern.
Dr. Mithal received her bachelor and medical degree through the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University. She completed her Pediatrics residency through Baylor College of Medicine at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. She returned to Chicago and worked as a neonatal hospitalist at Prentice Women’s Hospital prior to her ID fellowship at Lurie Children’s, which inspired her niche expertise and innovative research in perinatal infections.
