DIANE B. WAYNE, MD is Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and serves as Vice President for Human Resources for Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. She previously served as Vice Dean for Education at Northwestern from 2016-2020 and was the inaugural Dr. John Sherman Appleman Professor of Medicine from 2011-2021.
Dr. Wayne has received many honors and awards, including the 2016 Mentor of the Year award from Feinberg, the 2015 Patterson Award, bestowed annually to the Best Teacher in the Department of Medicine, and the 2021 Career Achievement in Medical Education Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine. In 2018, the Department of Medicine named the award for the best student in the medicine clerkship the Diane B. Wayne, MD Excellence Award. Dr. Wayne received her bachelor’s and medical degrees from Northwestern University.
Dr. Wayne’s research focuses on the intersection of education and patient care quality. Her expertise is in simulation-based research. Her team has shown that high quality education leads to improved clinical skills, reduced iatrogenic complications, and lower hospital costs than traditional approaches. She has published extensively on these topics in notable peer-reviewed journals such as Academic Medicine, the American Journal of Medical Quality, the Archives of Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and CHEST.
