Virology Team Lead
CDC, CO, United States
Dr. Powers received her Ph.D. and postdoctoral training in Molecular Arbovirology focusing on molecular determinants of mosquito infectivity and alphaviral evolution. She served as an Assistant Professor at UTMB prior to joining the CDC in 2000. Currently, she is Lead of the Virology Team in the Arboviral Diseases Branch and the Acting Associate Director for Science in the Division of Vector Borne Diseases. In her current position, work focuses on investigations of arboviral discovery and evolution, virus/mosquito interactions, identification of alphavirus genetic elements of virulence, field-based ecology and surveillance projects, and oversight of laboratories involved in arboviral vaccine development, animal model development, and immunobiology. She has held numerous additional international and national positions including serving as Chair of the Togaviridae Study Group for the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses, Chairman of the American Committee on Arthropod-borne Viruses, Deputy Editor for the PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases journal, Associate Editor for Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal, and as Councilor for the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
