Maria Elena Ruiz MD, FIDSA is the Assistant Section Chief of the Infectious Diseases Section at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C and holds the rank of Associate Professor at Georgetown University, Washington DC. She completed her residency and fellowship in Infectious Disease at the George Washington University, Washington DC.
Dr. Ruiz served as a medical Officer at the Food and Drug administration, Office of New Drugs, CDER and brought her experience to her role as
Chair of the Institutional Review Board of the MedStar Hospital for over a decade.
Dr. Ruiz serves as the Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As a member of the Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Team at MedStar, Dr Ruiz manages and directs the care of patients with complex cardiothoracic surgical and transplant infections. Device infections, including infections of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), is her particular area of expertise. Dr. Ruiz is a clinician-educator who works extensively with medical students, residents and fellows in the outpatient and inpatient setting. She has mentored hundreds of trainees and balances her passion for clinical care with mentoring the next generation of physicians.
Dr. Ruiz was born in Peru and is fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish.
