Dr David Jenkins qualifed from King's College Hospital Medical School, University of London, England in 1985 and undertook training in medical microbiology in Brighton and Newcastle-upon-Tyne as well as completing an MSc at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Primarily a practising clincian, he has been a consultant in medical microbiology at University Hospitals of Leicester since 1997 where he is the lead doctor for infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship. He is an honorary associate professor at the University of Leicester. Dr Jenkins took over the presidency of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy earlier this year where he is promoting an international antimicrobial stewardship accreditation programme. His research interests include behavioural aspects of antimicrobial prescribing and he has received funding from the United Kingdom Economics and Social Research Council for a study on prescribing practice in England, Sri Lanka and South Africa. He also has a keen interest in using computational approaches to help understand spatio-temporal aspects of antimicrobial resistance in the one million-plus population served by his diagnostic laboratory in Leicester. Outside work, he is a keen cyclist both on and off roads
