Dr. Mark M. Fukuda is a retired U.S. Army Medical Corps Infectious Disease Physician and internationally recognized scientist and global health expert based at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences where he most recently oversaw the DoD’s $5.5M Military HIV Research Program’s (MHRP) regional HIV research program in Southeast Asia, which spans the gamut from HIV epidemiology and risk stratification studies, development of HIV cohorts, research on HIV cure and vaccine development. Dr. Fukuda also served as science advisor for the DoD’s Defense Malaria Assistance Program and serves as science/technical advisor for MHRP’s PEPFAR activities in the Philippines. Colonel Fukuda’s professional interests include malaria surveillance, epidemiology, clinical and operational research, optimizing malaria case management, and teaching and mentoring of the next generation of malaria researchers and public health professionals. He has received numerous grants to execute malaria and other emerging infectious disease work and is an internationally recognized expert in the field of malaria drug resistance. Dr. Fukuda has authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications and abstracts, including the world’s first report of artemisinin resistance, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This discovery which helped catalyze a widespread international response to prevent the spread of artemisinin resistance spread globally also highlights the need to hasten global malaria elimination efforts.
Prior to that Colonel Fukuda served on interagency detail to the Centers for Disease Control for the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), a $650 US Government program to reduce global malaria burden. In this capacity, Colonel Fukuda coordinated PMI activities throughout Southeast Asia, spanning malaria surveillance, research and prevention and control activities in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China and Vietnam.
