Dr. Stephen Cole is Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Director of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine in the Department of Pathobiology. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science from the College of William and Mary where his research centered on emerging bacterial infections of fish. He then trained as a veterinarian and received his VMD from the University of Pennsylvania. Then he went on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical and molecular microbiology at UPenn and joined the Faculty in 2020. Dr. Cole is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists in bacteriology/mycology, immunology and virology. His research focuses on the emergence of Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacterales in companion animals and educational research on novel methods to teach antimicrobial stewardship to veterinarians. Dr. Cole has been named a One Health Scholar by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges and has received numerous teaching, service and mentoring awards. Stephen also performs with ComedySportz Philadelphia as an improv comedian.
